Joseph B. Pate
Funeral services for Joseph Burrell Pate Sr., 77, of 819 North Mangum Street, financial secretary of the Carpenters union, local No. 522 for the past 26 years were held this morning at 11:00 o'clock at the Howerton-Bryan funeral home. The Rev. Mr. Reeves , assistant pastor of the Calvary Methodist Church, conducted the services. Interment was in Maplewood Cemetery, Annex B.
The body will be removed from the residence to the funeral home at 9:00 o'clock Tuesday morning to await the hour of the service.
Pallbearers were the following grandsons of the deceased : Leyburn Parrish, Tucker Parrish, Paul Elliott, Watts Bryan Parrish, Sexton Wall Jr., and Judson Burgess.
Honorary pallbearers were : P.M.Taylor, L.P. Myers, Bud Tingen, G.W.Gilliam, Dr. W.H. Boone and W.M. Bryan.
Serviing as floral bearers will be the granddaughters of the deceased.
Mr. pate died at his home sunday afternoon at 1:10 o'clock, having suffered a heart attack a few minutes earlier. He had been in declining health for the past year.
The deceased was born and reared in Northampton county, the son of henry Edward Pate and Sarah Newsome Pate, and he recieved his education in the Northampton county schools.
Mr. Pate moved to this city in 1907. For a number of years he worked for the Durham Furniture Company, retiring from active work five years ago.
He had been a member of the Trinity Methodist Church since moving to this city.
On Feb 17, 1892 he was married to Miss Tempie Jane Wall of Northampton county, who survives as do four daughters, Mrs. D.S. Wall, Mrs. A.O. Parrish, and Mrs. Sarah Burgess all of Durham and Mrs. J.D. Mangum of Roxboro; four sons, Joseph Burrell Pate Jr., Willie W. Pate, Wallace S. Pate all of Durham and William Roland Pate of San Mateo, Calif. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
