Slade

The Meaning is from the old English word "Slaed" which denoted "a small secluded valley."  In one of the Robin Hood poems we find:

"It had been better of William a Trent,

To have been abed with sorrowe,

Than to be that day in the greenwood slade,

To meet with Little Johns Arrowe."

Burke's General Armory describes the four different Slade arms and the one Slaed.

In England,  Slaborn De ( of ) Slade was in County Essex in 1255.  Reginald atte ( at the ) Slade was at the Isle of Manx in 1306.  Walter in the Salde was in County Suffolk in 1327.  Amiel Slade of Devonshire was at Offord University in 1615.
